Spark or Fuel? Here’s How Pros Tell in 60 Seconds.

You pull.
And pull.
And pull again.

Nothing.

Your mower’s giving you the cold shoulder — no cough, no sputter, not even a half-hearted attempt at life.

Here’s the good news: it’s almost always fuel or spark.
Here’s the better news: I’ll show you how to tell which — in 60 seconds.

Step 1: Don’t Overthink It. Look in the Tank.

Sounds dumb, I know.
But you’d be shocked how many machines I’ve “fixed” just by adding fuel.

So before you do anything heroic, check the obvious.

Tank full? Onward.

Step 2: Prime the Truth Out of It

If it’s got a primer bulb, give it 3 pumps.
If it doesn’t, that’s fine — we’ll go manual.

Now, pull the cord once or twice.

No fire? Time to cheat.

Step 3: Spike the Carb

Pop off the air filter and drop a teaspoon of fresh gas straight into the carb throat.
Or better yet — carb cleaner spray. Half-second squirt.

Now pull the cord again.

Result A: It Fires (or at least coughs)?
Boom. You’ve got spark. The issue is fuel delivery.
Could be stale gas, blocked jet, clogged filter, bad fuel cap vent, or dirty carb. Doesn’t matter — you’ve just skipped 10 steps. You’re now playing offense.

Result B: Dead Silence?
No sputter, no backfire, no nothing?

That’s a spark issue.

Step 4: Suspect the Usual Suspects

Start with the plug. Pull it, inspect it.

Black and crusty? Clean or replace it.

Still nothing?

Could be:

  • A failing coil (armature)
  • A grounded kill switch (control lever not disengaging)
  • A chewed-through plug wire (ask me about the time a mouse built a condo in mine)

Tip: If you want to confirm spark, use a spark tester or — if you’re a savage — ground the plug to the engine and pull the cord while watching for spark. Just don’t shock yourself trying to look cool.

I see this stuff daily — neighbor’s mower “won’t start,” turns out they were chasing fuel problems when it was spark, or vice versa. Save yourself the headache.

Drop fuel. Pull cord. Observe.
One test. Two seconds. Instant direction.
